My RN license is under investigation, help!

Nurses Safety

Published

Hello all. I am an RN. Back in March of this year, I was reported to my state board of nursing for verbal abuse toward a nursing home resident. My state board tells me that even though my license is under investigation by them that I can still work as an RN because presently I have a fully valid unencumbered license because the outcome/ my reprimand has not yet been decided upon. I have been having a very difficult time trying to find an employer who will hire me while my license is under investigation by the state board. And furthermore, if the reprimand that I am given is probation, employers are either highly reluctant or restricted from hiring me. How am I supposed to serve out a reprimand if nobody will hire me. I currently work 2, six dollar an hour jobs and I am severly struggling with my bills. The state board states that its not uncommon for a licensee to spend two to three years trying to find an employer to be able to serve out a three, six, twelve, or more months probation. When I have presented the details my situation to various other health care professionals, I get a lot of responses back to me saying that they don't see where I was being verbally abusive. I can be more detailed in another post if needed. I would really like to hear from someone who has been in a similar situation to mine, or who may have some advice for me.

I am sorry this is happening to you. A close friend had the same problem. She went before the board and they suspended her liscense for something she didn't do. Apparantly two other nurses mad a major med error and because her signature was on narc sheet, they finagled it to look like her. She was appauled.

She got a job after several months at a md's office making half what she was making. She ended up on antidepressants and went to therapy. :angryfire

Wonderfully, her probation is almost over, ( I can't say I remember how long). But she is wondering if this will follow her forever.

Hello - I had a similar situation in that I was reported for verbal abuse and deliquent wound care towards a patient. I know i had to fill out a form stating what had happened and why i believed it was not verbal abuse (they stated i yelled at a pt, of course they left out the pt was practically deaf so you had to yell to get him to hear you). I was very specific in my claims for defense and I answered specifically each charge they leveled at me. I guess i got lucky since the state board decided their was no evidence of any wrongdoing. However, I found a job through an agency during that time so you might check out them. Also if you are only under investigation you might call and see what the dept of health says about your license when people call. If you haven't been convicted yet, it seems unfair that they would put something on your license, so I would check that out. That's all I have, as I said it didn't seem to affect my getting hired as I have worked steadily through 3 different agencies since then.

Hope this helps,

Pat
