My NCLEX Report Analysis- Advice Needed

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

I finally received my NCLEX report last week after failing the NCLEX on my first attempt on December 15th. Here is the breakdown:

Below the Passing Standard:

-Management of Care

Near the Passing Standard:

-Safety & Infection Control

-Health Promotion & Maintenance

-Psychosocial Integrity

-Basic Care & Comfort

-Pharmacological & Parenteral Therapies

-Physiological Adaptation

Above the Passing Standard:

-Reduction of Risk Potential

I understand that I need to score 'Above the Passing Standard' to pass and that 'Near the Passing Standard' is not good enough. I see that I basically need to improve in every area in order to pass the test. This is confusing and disheartening since I thought I studied every area prior to taking the test. I will admit that a fatal flaw on my first attempt was rushing through the questions rather than taking more time (I failed at 147 questions after 2.5 hours).

In studying for my first attempt I used MarryAnn Hogan's Comprehensive NCLEX Examination Review, Kaplan, and Hurst. Since those did not work out for me on my first attempt I have been using Uworld for the past 6 weeks. I am hoping to take it within 45 days, but honestly I will only take it when I feel ready. I need advice to help assure that I study each area well enough so that I pass the NCLEX on my next attempt. Please help!!!

Just continue to study using the resources you've been using. It seems like the majority of people do well with Uworld. I only used Exam Cram and did review questions from wherever I could get them. But I suggest doing the mock tests with your resources, then focusing on the areas that it shows you are weak in. Then as you continue doing questions, for each question you answered incorrectly, look at the rational and think about what lead you to the wrong choice.

The NCLEX isn't so much about knowing ALL of nursing, that's impossible. You need to be able to understand what the question is asking you. Look for key words in the question, eliminate the answers that are definitely wrong, and if you are still unsure, choose the option that is the safest/most therapeutic.

When I took the nclex, other than the questions about communication, I would just think about A.B.C. and Maslow's when selecting my answer.

Management of care questions are worth the highest percentage of your overall nclex score. So I would focus a lot on those types of questions. I recommend the linda lacharity book titled something like "prioritization, delegation..." it has nothing but management of care questions in it.
