Hi. I graduate in May and have started my search for employment. Haven't found any L&D positions around here.
If I can't get in L&D what would be a good second choice until I can? And should I still contact hospitals and tell them I am a new grad and interested in L&D or just look for posted positions?

Anything in maternal child will get you in the door. Post-Partum and Pedi & LD may have same supervisor and share staff, to some extent. Depends on size of hospital, but I would at least try that route.

You might talk to your professors. I had a friend who got a position that had not been posted to the public in part becasue the professor had taught the nurse manager as well and she gave a great recommendation. Of course she deserved it..freakishly smart.
Thanks! I do have some time (four months) so hopefully I will find my dream job in L&D. I am willing to work mother/baby, nursery, postpartum, whatever! :) I just love babies, pregnant bellies, and new mommies. I am willing to drive an hour so that gives me some pretty good options. Thanks for the responses. I will ask my professors.

Strictly based on numbers, NICU positions are usually the "easiest" to come by in Maternal-Child health. Most large teaching hospitals have NICUs with as many as 50 beds. Labor and delivery units typically have far fewer beds, as do mother-baby units, general peds floors, and PICUs. So, if you are open to the idea of working in NICU, that will help you get a foot in the door of the Maternal-Child department of a hospital. NICU nurses attend deliveries to do baby care and assist with resuscitations, so they often develop close working relationships with the L&D staff.
