I just received the letter I have waited over 2 years for... I finally will be beginning nursing school at Mt SAC this upcoming spring 2014. Anyone else get their letter? Orientation is set for January 14-17.
Any recommendations on what to study before the program starts? It's been over 2years since A&P and Microbiology and I feel like I need a refresher.
I am also anxious on what I should buy for nursing school... do I need a watch? laptop or ipad? Any other essentials that I don't know about?
I am really excited and nervous to begin this journey!

1. Brush up on your A&P now there is NO time to review once the program starts- you will only have time to study the material being covered.
2. Brush up on your math skills (fractions, decimals, conversions, and understand how dimensional analysis works for dosage calculations)- you will need to know this for pharmacology- the course is heavily weighted on math. Each theory class also requires the passing of a dosage calc test in order to move on.
3. In orientation they will go over all supplies needed including BP cuffs, uniform, watch etc. There will even be some available to purchase at orientation.
4. If you have a job- prepare to quit; If you have kids- prepare for daycare 2x over (staying home with a sick child really isn't an excuse:( ); If your a parent prepare to accept that you will not spend as much time with your family as you would like- prepare for the sacrifice (its hard- but you get through it); if your married- prepare to spend more time at school with your classmates studying than with them. Also, the attendance policy is very strict and they will go over it, which is why you have to have a plan A, plan B, and plan C for everything.
5. Don't compete with anyone in class or compare yourself to others, do your best and study- this program is not for procrastinators....
6. If possible look for NCLEX style book - nursing testing is based on critical thinking not your standard multiple choice method we learned from K-college. Every answer is potentially the right answer but you have to determine which is the highest priority.
7. I got a bag with rollers, the first semester is tough since you will have two classes simultaneously and binders, books, etc.
8. In orientation you will get the textbook list (get them FAST since you have only a little time to read prior to starting class. Get a head start on the reading.
Good luck!
