Moving from case management to FNP

Published

Hello everyone! I am new to the boards here, but I have been coming here for advice since the beginning of nursing school a couple years ago.

Before I get into my question, a little bit of background. I have my BSN, and I have been working in a float pool for approximately 8 months now. I can work on 11 different units, including cardiac progressive, neuro, rehab, ortho, etc. It has been a very "busy" experience to say the least.

Due to several reasons and circumstances, I am looking to move out of the hospital setting for now. I am pursuing a case management job with the county. The way things are going, it looks like I will be getting the job.

My question is, there was always this part of me that wanted to become a FNP later down the road in my career. Am I shooting myself in the foot by moving into a role that is not direct patient care? I understand that 8 months is not much in terms of direct care, but I have learned more than I ever thought I would in such a short amount of time, seeing as I work on 11 different units.

I am not even sure that I will pursue my FNP, but I wanted to keep my options open in case I do. I hear mixed things, some stating that you should have several years of hospital experience before getting that advanced degree, and then there are those that went straight from RN to FNP (or some other NP).

I am excited to hear your opinions, thank you everyone :)
