moving to Boston

Published

Hi everyone. I've been lurking around the forums for a few weeks but decided I should get around to registering and introducing myself.

My fiancee and I are preparing to move to Boston in mid-June. She will be attending grad school there and I wish to pursue a career in nursing. My plan is to get accepted to one of the several ADN programs in the area.

I will be shooting for the Fall 2011 term as that should give me ample time to finish up the last few prereqs that many of these programs share. I am planning on taking A+P1 and Chemistry this fall at Quincy college. After those I will most likely take Microbiology and English comp 2 or something along those lines.

As for the Fall 2011 program I am hoping to apply to 4-5 programs. The ones I am thinking of right now are Regis College (Lawrence Memorial), Quincy College, Bunker Hill CC and Roxbury CC. I was also considering Northern Essex CC but I am a little confused as to what is a prereq there. On their website, they have more than half the courses for the program labelled as prerequisites. http://www.necc.mass.edu/programsassociatedegree/nursing.shtml

I've read some mixed reviews about some of these schools. Any comments or advice are appreciated. Thanks.

I called Northern Essex and apparently the only prereqs to apply are two sciences - which in my case would be Chem and A+P. It's a bit discouraging when I call these places and ask about how many seats there are in the program vs. how many applicants. Especially when the one program was telling me about having turned people away with 4.0s. I suppose all I can do at this point is to continue studying my A+P book so I am better prepared to get a good grade this fall.

Hopefully you have continued to take the pre-req's/co-req's. I took a few courses at Northern Essex CC. You could also look into Bunker Hill Community College. They have a long wait list - so I've heard. I am in my first year of the ADN program at Roxbury CC. The exams can be tough, but not impossible. Make sure when you fill out your FAFSA - when you're planning to apply to all these programs - That you include all of the schools in which you plan on applying to. That way you won't have to worry about amending it if you get into a school you hadn't added.

Mostly any school you choose to go to in MA will have a pretty good program. You can also check the NCLEX Pass rates to get an idea. The most updated year is 2009. In that year Roxbury CC had a 92% pass rate.

Here's the site: http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=eohhs2terminal&L=5&L0=Home&L1=Researcher&L2=Physical+Health+and+Treatment&L3=Nursing+Statistics&L4=National+Council+Licensure+Examinations+(NCLEX)+by+School&sid=Eeohhs2&b=terminalcontent&f=dph_quality_boards_nursing_r_nclex_09_perform_summary&csid=Eeohhs2

I like the program so far, the instructors are really helpful. I know it's been a year since your post, but I hope this information in some way helps.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. :)

Thanks for the info - that link with the NCLEX rates is really helpful. Since that post I've actually been attending Quincy college doing my pre and co-reqs. I just applied to their fall nursing program so hopefully I'll get some good news soon. =)

Hi Tyler,

Have you heard anything else from quincy college? Just waiting impatiently!

I took my pre-reqs at Northern Essex and can say the program there is competitive to get into. They got rid of their night program to work on a new one so there are less seats. I know people with 4.0 gpa's and good TEAS scores that did not get in. They require you to take the TEAS and want all of your sciences to be a B or better. If you can get into their program it is a good program. I have had their students do clinicals where I work and they are the most prepared out of the other schools that come. The program has a good reputation and the instructors are very knowledgeable. They require you to go to a mandatory information session so they will most likely answer all of your questions there. Good luck!

Still no word yet, hopefully by the end of the month.
