Mother baby or PACU residency as a new grad?

Published

Hello all.

im hoping to get some insight. I recently received two residency offers from the same hospital, that being mother baby and PACU. The residency for PACU is 20 weeks. They also state that assigned mentors stay with you even after finishing the residency program. After doing some research, I was leaning more towards PACU but then read that PACU is not a good place for new nurses to start, which I get. But if it was such a bad idea, why are hospitals offering this as residency choice? Any nurses on here who started in PACU that can tell me what it was like being a new grad in the PACU setting? Or is mother baby the better choice for a new grad? I love the teaching aspects of mother baby and being able to be involved in assisting with caring for a new baby with the mother. The only thing with mother baby is the 2 patients in one (mom and baby), which I feel can get really overwhelming. What I like about PACU is being able to monitor a patient who is waking up from surgery and being their advocate during this critical time. The 2:1 patient nurse ratio is also appealing. My family tells me they think I would make a better PACU nurse. Any advice is much appreciated!
