so i know this is an OB nursing forum and probably just meant for OB nurses, not nursing students..but i feel like maybe you all will know more than the nursing student forum will..so bear with me please i am getting ready to start my OB clinicals in about 2 weeks at a hospital about 30-40 minutes from where i live (including traffic)...i love OB nursing so far and would love to be a L&D, Mother/baby, or NICU nurse after graduating. Therefore, I have been looking for a tech position while in nursing school..I feel like it might help my chances and just give me the exposure to the OB nursing environment. so i applied for a position at the hospital i will being my OB clinicals at and they called me today about it and said they thought it was a full-time position and they usually don't hire full-time for nursing students...well looking at the job post it says part-time 18 hours a week for 3rd shift. so i called back but they were already out of office i guess. but what i was wondering is...how do you work 18 hours a week if the hospital does 8 or 12 hour shifts?? also, does that sound too much for nursing school especially working nights? i think i could do it and would love to do it i am just confused about how many nights a week that would entail...i could work like 1 or 2 nights over the weekend and then like a weeknight but anymore than that and i'd be too exhausted and as a nurse or tech do you think working on an OB floor during nursing school would be beneficial? sometimes i hear that working as a tech doesn't really reflect working as a nurse because the job roles are so different and that the tech way of doing it may not be the "nursing school" way to do a task. i was just wondering, any information or advice would be appreciated

Nights are really rough while in nursing school. I know a few people who managed it, but most struck out after a month or two. Grades have to come first.
As for your question about parttime/18 hours a week, its hard to say not knowing the way they schedule, but I know the hospital I worked at before starting my further schooling, aids and techs did not work 12 hour shifts like nurses did. It may be a position filling in gaps that other techs or assistants can't make, or to provide overlap during hours that are unusually busy.
