Monkey Bars

Are the bane of my existence. In the past couple weeks I've had two broken arms from monkey bar falls. With just a day and half between me and spring break, if another kid falls, I might go tear the thing down myself!

On the positive, the ER DR commented to mom that it was smart of whoever splinted the kid's arm with a magazine. Kid told the doc it was the school nurse. ?

Do you guys know about GaGa ball? I'm ready to rip that pit out. SO many mangled, meaty knuckles from that game.

I still remember back in the 80's doing penny drops, death drops, and suicides on the monkey bard and they were mounted on hard, packed mud

You guys are weenies. In the 60's and 70's it was concrete! ?

There was a GaGa ball pit at one school I subbed at. The PTO was so proud they had raised the funds for that finger-death trap. It became like Lord of the Flies on the recess grounds after they installed it. They had to assign a recess monitor specifically to the pit. I think they have since outlawed use of it during school hours...

I know! We have to have someone monitoring the play and our principal had to come up with a schedule of which grades can play which day - because sometimes grades overlap out there. Kids have fallen backward when they were sitting on the walls and cracked their heads. Others have kind of tripped and fell trying to get their leg over the walls to get out. I hate it. Thanks PTO ?

Wow look at how much things have changed since 1900!! That's crazy!! Last year we had 5 kids with broken bones and 2 with stitches from the playground. Three were from falling off the monkey bars and landing the wrong way. The principal increased recess coverage to double and the teachers complained big time but so far (knock on wood) no breaks yet this year. They add new mulch every year. I agree they should just be banned all together!

Our playground doesn't get mulch (engineered wood fiber) added to it until we hear Chinese music playing from underground.

Before we moved to this campus we had pea gravel as the surfacing and experienced ZERO fractures. There is "Engineered Wood Fiber" here at this campus, which is "safer" than pea gravel (they say) and we have one or two fractures every year.

THIS is my Bane! It was ok in the winter and the darn thing was covered with snow, but this fall and the last few days, I get 2-3 scraped knuckles a day. Its unreal.

GaGa ball looks awful! What sadist thought of that? I'd complain about the monkey bars, but knowing my luck they'd replace it with GaGa ball.

1/2 day until spring break ?

Ohhh! The Witch's Wheel! We had so much fun on that. Nowadays not only would it be forbidden for safety reasons but also or its moniker.

My husband broke his arm on the monkey bars his first day of kindergarten. He didn't want to be a bother so he told the school nurse he felt fine. It was actually broken in 2 places, and he came home with a dangling arm. That would have been the late 90s.

I am in my 50's now, but, my twin sister fell off the monkey bars in 6th grade, broke her humerus in two places and dislocated her shoulder.

Had to be placed under general anesthesia for reduction and casting/splinting. She was kept overnight for observation. My parents took me to the hospital to see her that evening. As soon as I walked in, those nurses in their white uniforms, the smell in the hospital (I am thinking it was the cleaning supplies now!), the doctors in their button down shirts and ties and the candy stripers, all set in motion my desire to be a nurse.

I often credit her and her clumsiness as my gateway into healthcare.

At any rate, the monkey bars scare the bejeezus out of me and I beg my granddaughter,t he same way I begged her Dad, to stay off of them.
