Mohawk College RPN 2015 - any students willing to share their experience?

Published

I am a mature student and mom with 2 young children. I have been accepted into the RPN program for Sept 2015 and deciding whether to accept. I currently work full time and have gainful employment with both my kids in daycare. I'm also working on my IBCLC, volunteer and spend every spare moment cooking, cleaning and caring for my kids.

I hate my current profession and I'm looking for more fulfilling work. I understand being a nursing student and working as a nurse is not easy. However, I'm used to a pretty hectic schedule and I actually enjoy and miss shift work. I have a university degree and courses in healthcare, so I am hoping to get a few transfer credit (probably just health sciences 1 & 2, communications and any electives). That said, can anyone give some insight into what the workload is like as a nursing student? Any parents or mature students that can comment on life/school balance? I want to return to school, but I need to be there for my kids as well and would rather wait till their older if needed (although here is never a good time to return to school). What is the class schedule like? I know how many courses/hours I have to do each semesters, but will I be required to take courses in the evenings or weekends, do night shifts for placements etc? What's a typical day like? Any insight would be appreciated!

thanks
