Hello guys,
I need some encouragement!! I am two courses away from being able to try to enroll in nursing school. The RN program in my area is very competive. You have to score in the top 75th percentile before you are even considered for the program, and they only accept 60 students once a year. So needless to say, alot of competition. I have moderate to severe hearing loss in my left ear and I am profound in my right ear. I used to be moderate in both ears up until almost two years ago, I just drastically lost alot. My whole family is deaf so it was expected. I wasn't prepared for the change though. I decided I wanted to be an RN before I lost my hearing dramatically. Now I am concerned, can I do the job? Would I be able to pass everything and be a good RN Nurse? I love the medical field, everything about it. I eventually want to work in the nursery room on the L&D floor. I also have some concern because I have an 8 month old and am 6 weeks pregnant now. I am concerned that I may not be able to juggle two kids, a husband, a household and nursing school. Any advice?? Any of you nurses out there, what kind of resources do you use to help you do your job?? does anyone use clear masks?? Please any support and advice would be so beneficial to me!
Thanks!

Nothing is impossible! I am a single mom of 4, one has severe hearing loss and he and another son are on the autism spectrum. I work part time and go to school..finishing my last pre-req to go into the LVN-RN bridge course. Yes I get your concerns. Its hard, but possible, you do really have to schedule yourself and stick to it. I get up to study before the kids are awake at 4 am so that I am not taking mom time from them. This also means that I have to do this 7 days a week to keep up. I have been a LVN for 10 years and I do rely on hearing, and yet there are stethoscopes for hearing impaired people, and so many other resources that I probably don't even know about. If nursing is in your blood and you cant imagine doing anything else, FOLLOW YOUR DREAM and everything else will fall into place. Good luck!

hi,
I have a charge nurse at my facility and she is hard of hearing, she is an excellent nurse. She supposed to wear hearing aids but does not so we make sure when communicating with her we face her. And I also have a child who is deaf and i was in nursing school when it was discovered, and it was extremely hard. Focus, have strength and you can do anything just believe!!!!!!!:)
