Missing the first day of class?

he guys just a quick question do your professors ever drop students that arent present on the first day of class??

Not that I know of. The majority of students that I know of that aren't in class on the first day simply because they registered extremely late or had to get a write in to the class. Have you considered emailing the professor to explain your circumstances?

My school has a policy that you must attend the first class or you are automatically dropped. It probably depends on your school/teacher as well.

I have known Professors during the Regular Semester sessions to give a student a chance to attend by the second class before dropping him/her. But not during the Summer session courses. It is an automatic drop, no questions asked.

i agree. i couldnt imagine missing the first day unless it were for something Completely unavoidable (and obviously, those types of things Do come up). But, i would feel like i started off on the wrong foot, and was already behind the ball if i skipped it.

Its a rule to attened your first class or else you are dropped, no if's and or buts about it. (at my college) I had a class that I got into over the summer. I was on a waiting list and I showed up on time to see if I could get in. Enough people did not show up that I got a seat in the class. About 10 mins after class started some one who was signed up for the class (not on a waiting list) showed up. The teacher told her that because she was late her seat was given to some one on the waiting list....too bad. I supose you could get ahold of your teacher and see if you could miss the first day, but I would not do it without asking.

In general, you don't want to miss the first day of class because that is usually when the instuctor or professor passes out the syllabus and discusses the pitfalls that students often get into with that particular class. I've had instructors who only print the number of handouts based on the number of students on their student roster as a paper saving measure. If you missed the class--tough beans. Get a copy of the handout from another student!

It's not a rule at my school (that I know of), but I know my Growth and Development teacher did it because there was a waiting list to get into the class. The way she reasoned, if someone wasn't going to show up, she could go to the waiting list and let a few other students in. :)

Unless it is an emergency situation, why would anyone miss the first day of class?

It usually takes about a week before things get situated in my classes....people either register late, are in the wrong class etc....don't worry you will be fine if you have to miss the first day.

I wouldn't miss the first day of class if I were you. My school will drop you if you miss any class (even non nursing classes). I agree with the others that say the teachers set the expectations on the first day and so you will feel really far behind if you miss it. You have come this far so it's not worth it to get off on the wrong foot. Hopefully whatever it is you have to do that day isn't too big of a deal.
