at my school, you have a week before you are dropped

My school has a policy that you must attend the first class or you are automatically dropped. It probably depends on your school/teacher as well.

I once had an instructor that told us that the only excuse for missing a class is death: your own. And you'd better have your family provide the appropriate certificate or you'd still get an F.

Seriously, if you don't have absolute permission from the instructor ahead of time (for a bonafide can't-avoid-it emergency), BE there.
