Military PCS to Japan

Next year, our family will be PCSing to a new location that is not set in stone at this time. It will be his last tour before he retires and we want to go somewhere exciting. Now that it's getting closer, Japan keeps being brought up and I'm a little scared to go. I just passed my NCLEX and will be starting as an RN later this month. I do not want to work so hard to obtain this achievement just to sit on my butt and not use it. There is a hospital on base and I keep hearing conflicting stories about them not hiring Americans versus that they give spouses preference to hiring. Can anybody shed some light on his situation? Has anybody had any experience about working internationally in a hospital on an American military base? Or has anybody been stationed in Okinawa or worked in the hospital there?

been out here since june with no luck on finding a job. I have applied to every single opening on usa jobs even with the military spouse prefs. i am still always beat. I bave pretty much given up. Okinawa is a place where spouses have no careers. At least that is my experience.

I'm so disappointed to hear that. I, too am an RN. My husband is looking at orders this summer to Okinawa. I really want to work, but I have heard it's darn near impossible for us. Have you had any luck since you posted this?

Update on the job status .... still no luck. I have seriously applied to every RN position that comes out on usaajobs. I have given up. But if you RNs want to hang out and are already on the island hit me up! We can chat and waste away in okinawa let me know! I miss hanging out with nurses its such a shock coming here and having to have my career on hold. 2 more years and counting for me. If you guys have any questions let me know.

Ugh. That's not what I was hoping to hear. Sorry the job search has stalled for you. I was thinking that if I can't find something at the hospital, maybe an online job doing utilization review for Aetna or something? I wonder if that can be done from Japan?

Do you live on base or out in town? The housing office told us that there is a 30 day wait to get into a house on base and they may not be able to accommodate our little dog. I've never done an overseas move and I'm really nervous about it.

I definitely want to hang out with you. Red or white wine? (I'm partial to Bud Lite myself...classy).

That's sucks on the job hunt. I was wondering about a work from home position as well if spots weren't available at the hospital. Looks like I'll more than likely be out there in May. We should definitely get together.
