Midwife As Neonatal Nurse Practitioner?

Published

Can a midwife functioin legally as a neonatal nurse practitioner.

There is a hopsital in PA where this is the case. The hopsital's justification is that this nurse has received "on the job training."

Could this nurse's license be in jeopard?

Thank you.

Can you be a little more specific as to what her duties are? If she is acting in the delivery room to resuscitate a newly-delivered infant, I believe that would be appropriate. If she is caring for infants in the well-baby nursery, that may also be OK, as it seems to be within the scope of a midwife's practice. If she is admitting and caring for NICU patients, that may not be appropriate. Your best course of action would be to check with the PA State BON.
