Hi y'all!
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with being diagnosed with a mental illness and becoming a nurse. I was told that since I'm bi polar I cannot be a nurse. I'm stable, and have been for the last 7 years. I work at one of major hospital systems in Houston and have been here going on 6 years. I take my medicine and see my PMHNP regularly. She believes I will make an amazing nurse and is excited for me, but that statement is still echoing in the back of my mind.
Is there anything special I need to do, or do I need to reach out to the TX BON?
Thanks in advance.

Your mental illness cannot keep you from being a nurse because it is your private medical information and that would be discriminatory. Will your illness or symptoms make it more critical that you stay on top of your self care and medication? Sure. But your current stability speaks for itself.
