MEDS leanring System-RN

Can anyone explain this to me? I don't know what it is, all I know if that I have 5 attempts to score 80%. What material does it cover? I am just starting nursing school and it is in my syllabus. Also what is the NLN acheivement test? Thanks!

Are you talking about http://www.medspub.com? We do those LSRN's for my program as a requirement but they aren't graded. It depends on your class, but we had LSRN's on medications and drug calculations, therapeutic communication, basic med-surg questions, questions on safety...I'm in my second semester of my first year so our stuff is still pretty basic. Is there anyway that you can do a practice mode instead of the test/assessment mode right away? The test/assessment mode will grade you while the practice mode will not. Good luck! :nurse:

yes, i see I have a typo in the heading :) Apparently, ours is for a grade, and it must be at lest 80%. I wonder if that is the test that most nursing schools require for dosage calcualtion? Math is not my favorite subject, but I do well enough in it. I got an A in Algebra and in Chemistry....is the nursing med math similiar? I am so nervous :)

At my school, we had to take a dosage calculation test by a certain date and pass with a 90% or better or else we can't do clinicals. It wasn't in the form of an LSRN, though, but we had LSRNs on drug calculations to practice with. Don't worry, math isn't my favorite subject either, but dosage calcuations aren't extremely difficult - you just need to know basic math (add, subtract, divid, decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions...) and a little bit of algebra helps in my opinion, and you got an A in that class so you should be fine. If you are really worried, here are some resources:

  • http://www.dosagehelp.com/ contains dosage calculation tutorials for different drug problems you will encounter. you can also have them email you a drug calculation problem every day so that you can work on it, it really helps!
  • https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-student/nursing-math-thread-264395.html the nursing math thread
  • https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-discussion/math-and-nursing-93383.html math and nursing
  • Calculate With Confidence is a book that was required by my program, but it has helped soooo much! There are A LOT of problems to practice with and the book shows you different ways to solve the problems, including how to solve using dimensional analysis. Dimensional analysis confuses the crap out of me, but the book is nice because it shows other ways on how to solve problems. I highly recommend this book.
  • Math For Nurses is nice, but not as in-depth as Calculate With Confidence. Personally I would choose the Calculate With Confidence book over this one, but it still helps with extra practice (different book = different problems). It's also a lot smaller than the Calculate With Confidence book so it is more portable.

:)

Thanks! Well, if the nursing math is similiar to the chemistry math I should do fine. I ended up with a 98% in Chemistry and found it odd that I did better than many people who took College Algebra did. I have not taken college algebra yet, just the class before it. It is not required for the ADN degree at my school, but I do plan to take the class ( college algebra) because I plan to go on for my BSN. I have heard many nursing students say math is not their strongest subject but still did well with it in nursing class. I am just intimidated by it I guess, particulary random math questions that I am timed on. I did well enough in math to get into the program so hopefully my math skills are strong enough to get through the drug calculations :)

You will be fine! Start looking over those drug sample problems to get an idea on how to solve them, then practice, practice, practice! Drill them into your head and then when you have to take a drug calc test, it will be easy! Good luck! :heartbeat

thanks so much for the encouragement! I got my books so I am going to start going over them. Fortunately, my husband is a math whiz so if I get stuck he will help me out. Thanks again!
