Medical Assistant - Urgent Care

Published

Hello,

Are they any medical assistants who have experience in urgent care? I will be starting an urgent care job next month, and I'm wondering what medical assistants typically do in this setting? I already have a general idea, but I wonder if it varies from office to office? I had an offer from a private urgent care office. They told me I would be doing blood draws, injections, med administration, wound irrigation, splinting/casting, EKGs, nebulizations, spirometry, breathalyzer testing, and so much more. They also train their medical assistants in IV therapy.

The job I accepted, however, is with an urgent care that is part of a local hospital system in town. That being said, I'm pretty sure the hospital is more careful with what tasks they assign to medical assistants. For instance, I can't imagine they would train us in IV therapy. I'm pretty sure we will have RNs who will be dealing with that.

Of note, EMT-B's in my state are allowed to take an IV certification class, and their education is one semester long..

At my current asthma and allergy position, I have experience with neb treatments, spirometry, medication administration, injections (ID, SQ, and IM), patient teaching (asthma meds), and TONS of experience with anaphylaxis.

As a former military medic I have experience with trauma/emergency medicine, triaging, IV therapy, med administration, wound care, etc.

Despite what seems to be a decent foundation of experience, I am still pretty nervous. I think I tend to get nervous with major changes in my life. Anyway, I thought insight from other medical assistants in urgent care would help alleviate my anxiety about changing jobs. Thanks! :)
