May Grad Trying to Get info on Licensing in VA

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi everyone,

I am in an Army program that pays for me to attend nursing school. Of course, I owe Uncle Sam when I finish, which is in May. I am attending school in New Orleans, LA, but would like to sit for the NCLEX (and thus licensure in VA). Are there any recent grads with some info on this process and what the timelines are like? Specifically

1. I printed out an application from the VA Board of Nursing. Do I need to submit the completed and notarized application, fees, and passport photo to VA before I graduate? And then the school sends in a transcript/proof of graduation?

2. Is anything else required with the application (here in LA, the school is doing fingerprints)?

3. Any idea on the approximate time frame to get an ATT? I am trying to get my results in time to attend a required Army officer class in mid-July?

4. Finally, does anyone have any insight into working at Walter Reed?

Thank you.

I graduated in May 2009 and our Nursing School's administrative assistant gave us all the information to apply for an ATT. She even told us not to apply until after April 1st. She also sent out the transcripts to the VBON. I remember I got mine in June and people were signing up to take the Boards in July. There were no fingerprints required when I turned in my application. I hope this information is helpful.

1. You can apply to the BON and Pearson (NCLEX registration) now--you just won't get your ATT until your school sends the BON your transcript. Another helpful hint: put in your transcript request early as well--don't wait until the last day of classes. Most schools will let you put in an early request for your transcript to be sent once you have completed your degree requirements.

2. No fingerprints. And make sure it's a real passport photo, and one which isn't too dark (i.e., they can see your face).

3. Who knows? I applied for everything early and got my ATT within a week of graduation....and some classmates who applied at the exact same time as I did had to wait several weeks for theirs. I think the longest wait took nearly two months...but most of my class got their ATT within a month of graduation. IMO it's the luck of the draw.

And once you get it, register for the NCLEX early, as dates fill up fast.

4. Sorry, never worked there :)
