Foreign Nurse in Mass HEEELP!

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hello everyone,

I'm on the latest stages of receiving a MA nursing license as a foreign graduated nurse, but from the point of receiving the license, the nexts steps are completely unknown to me. If there is a fellow nurse who already went through this path I'd really appreciate some help. I have some concrete questions:

1. I have a B1/B2 tourist visa, can I apply jobs and attend interviews with this type of visa and then change my immigration status?

2. I've seen a VisaScreen service by CGFNS but it is quite unclear to me what is the purpose of VisaScreen (is that the next step after receiving a license)

3. How is the application process with hospitals in Boston or the surrounding towns (which is were i'm thinking to settle).

Thank You very much!!!

Hey there,

I can't directly answer your question (was on a H1-B visa, currently on an F1 visa, with OPT).

I just wanted to mention you should be VERY careful about job-seeking on a tourist visa, since it is not considered within the scope of that visa. Those visas are issued purely for a specific business/leisure purpose, and it could cause trouble with immigration in the future if they work out that you were interviewing and applying while on that status.

Also, Boston is very competitive for new graduates. It's much easier if you've done clinical rotations here, but to get your foot in the door you may need to look further away. You didn't mention how much experience you have, if any, but just good to know! Also hospitals here for the most part strongly encourage or require a BSN.

Good luck!!
