Management or Education in the OR?

I am wondering if I can get any input or thoughts on pursuing an MSN...

I have only worked in the OR. I would like to get my MSN but can't decide if I want to do management or education. The only place I would most likely work in either of those fields is in the OR. I love to teach and precept new nurses. I don't know if I could get a job anywhere else though-except the OR and I don't know if there are that many opportunities for work for an OR educator.

I am also in charge at my OR and I have really enjoyed the supervisory position, working with the surgeons and keeping everything running and coordinated. However, I don't know how much I want to dwell on finances and all that other stuff that annoys us in the OR. Plus, my managers lives, sleep, eat and breathe this place and I don't know if I would want that (I would go work elsewhere, but that seems to be pretty universal for management).

Any insight would help...do you do either of these and particularly love/hate what you do? Are there other opportunities I may not be thinking of? I will have my CNOR and MSN and 5 yrs by the time I am done. Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Hi! I can't say that *I know your system in depth, but if you'll choose management, you'll probably find yourself behind a desk and dealing with lots of papers................ On the other hand, perhaps the office will be located in the OR?! LOL.:coollook:

Education sounds more to where you are heading at this point. Leave the managerial side for a couple of years and learn the profession. The more experience you gain as an OR Nurse will give you better insight and tools to work with later on.

Good luck.
