LVN to RN

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

Hey everyone!!! So currently I am an LVN and want to do more in my career... I graduated from Kaplan North Hollywood in 2011 and am now looking to go back to school for my RN... down the road my main goal is to have a BSN... As of now I am stuck between 2 schools either West Coast University or College of Canyons... Has anyone here been to either school? & what are your thoughts on both schools?... I'm really hesitant about west coast due to the fact that it will cost me well over $115,000... I mean c'mon why pay so much for school, right?? I was considering west coast because of the fact that it would only take me 2 years and 10 months to complete the LVN-BSN program where as COC will take me roughly 2-2 1/2 years (with pre-reqs)to get my ADN and an extra 12 months to transfer from COC to CSUN and get my BSN so all in all i would be spending 8 extra months at COC than at WCU... oh and i would save about $100,000 lol...What do you guys think?? Any advice?? Has anyone been to COC and what pre-reqs do I need to apply for the nursing program? Any kind of advice is much appreciated!!! Thank you!!!

~Mary

I personally would not spring for the program that costs 115k. Why not consider entering a community college and finishing the latter half of their existing ADN program? It should run you less than 10k to get your RN since you hold the LVN already. You have many options in that respect especially if you are willing to relocate. After two years as an LPN in Oregon I reentered my original ADN program and finished it in one year. It was less than 8k in 2010. Then you can do an online RN-BSN while working full time. I did that through Liberty University and it took 1.5 years going full time while working full time 12 hour night shifts in a hospital setting. My BSN program gave me clinical credit for having the RN already and is CCNE accredited. It cost less than 15k and many employers offer assistance with that degree. Just some thoughts based on my own experiences. Good luck!

Your completely right! COC is a community college they work with California State University of Northridge... Basically with pre-reqs the lvn to adn program is 2 to 2 1/2 years depending how quick you finish the per-requesits after they transfer you to CSUN to finish your BSN in 12 months... what do you think? :)

I'm sorry to be so redundant in my post then! I think COC and continuing on with CSUN sounds like the winner! Why pay more when a few extra months won't really hurt you in the long run? Such exciting times for you :) best of luck in all of your endeavors!

Thank you so much for the advise! I'll be sure to take it :) COC does seem great regardless of the time it takes to finish! God bless.

I'm an LVN & I am taking my pre-req's at COC. COC has very high standards & this is different from Valley, Mission or Pierce (I also attended Mission & Pierce long ago). COC is not an LACC thus has different standards but I loved their staff support in the nursing dept thus I decided to stay with COC. They want LVN's for their bridge program but finding qualified LVN's has been tough (I don't know why). I sure hope I'm not one of them. Everything you need to know is on the COC web site & I suggest attending an information seminar. They will answer all your questions. They even stayed with me after to talk specifically with me to encourage me. Good luck & keep up with school. It will all pay off in the end.
