LVN and full time student at the university of california, Merced

Published

Hello,

I am currently a full time student at UC Merced, originally majoring in Biology but I have changed career paths. I want to be enroll at in a nursing program to BSN. I want to volunteer but the hospitals close by are limited to how many people they accept into their volunteer program. I also think the volunteer program takes up too much time away from studies. Is it possible to be enroll in an LVN program and be a full time college student? I think I can get the experience I need and the courses I need to transfer into a nursing program. Any advise? or should I just get my certified nurse assistant certificate and get experience through that?

Hey I live in Merced and I will be starting the BSN program @ CSU Stanislaus. But are u asking if you can do the LVN program and still attend UC Merced? If that's what your are saying I wouldn't recommend that at all. The nursing program is going to be very time consuming that u won't be able to focus on anything else. So if nursing is wat u wanna do then just go ahead and do that full time. I would highly advise you to look into doing a BSN program.

Hello,

I got into the pre nursing program at CSU Stanislaus, which is a four year nursing program, that will give me a BSN. After those four years i can get two years of experience and apply for my masters as a CRNA or a NP. Which one is a better bet? Which one has a higher job opening. Also another option was I can go to UC Merced for four years and get a Bachelors degree in Biology. Afterwards i can four years of med school and roughly 4-6 years for my residency as an anesthesiologist. Which option would be a better bet? Do you think CRNA or a NP would be a more fun job to do? Thanks

numair,

Whatever you do, just keep in mind that even though you got into the pre-nursing program you will have to apply for the actual nursing program at CSUS after to years of prerequisites. Also, I honestly would not go into Biology at UCM since it seems like you are not sure you want to do yet, but you're leaning towards nursing. I have a couple of friends who did go to UCs thinking they wanted to be doctors, and ended up having to go back to CC so that they could fulfill pre reqs to become a nurse.

In other regards, between a CRNA and an NP, I think both have a rather decent job market but NP seems to be the safer route. CRNA's seem to have to spend more in insurance in case of malpractice, and nowadays many hospitals are looking to hire either MDs or NPs for general care. Both seem fun and filflling in their own ways though, but I would focus on getting my BSN first before anything else. In that time you're working on your BSN, you could perhaps volunteer under both types of nurses and decide where you want to go from there.
