I would go directly to your director of nurses and have her drag out that huge dusty policy and procedure book and have her point to the exact page that will give you the answer to your question. I dont think it should be you that has to find the answer. Your NH and DON should TELL you!!! Good luck
State Boards of Nursing define the LPN roles for the state. The institution in which they work then further defines what their specific duties can be.
Some State Boards allow LPN's to insert IV"S but the institution in which they work may not even allow them to flush or assess them.
This is where your DON should be of help as to what their particular job description entails. This should have already been clarified for you anyways without having to ask.
As far as the Procedure Manual goes, if you are a JCAHO accredited facility that and many other manuals should be at your disposal 24/7 on your unit.

I work at a nursing home in New York. Does anyone know where I can find the "rules" about LPN's doing Heparin flushes? I have heard that it is allowed and that it isn't allowed. I have looked at the dept. of health web site, but it is huge and unhelpful. Have also asked the state education dept., but wondered if I could get a quicker response through the bulletin board. Thank You.
