LPN student needs career help/suggestions from OR nurses please

Specializes in esthetician, LPN student.

Hi everyone. I would appreciate any career progression advise for the OR.

I'm a LVN student. I'm currently working for myself, as an aesthetician. I have 15+ years experience working in med spas. I have many certifications that are highly desirable in med spas including laser, paramedical tattooing, Botox/filler training and electrolysis. I make good money working for myself part-time and it's not that stressful work, while I am in school. I am going for my RN as soon as I can.

I know I want to work in the OR, but am not sure I want to stay in aesthetics. I'm actually open to any area and like variety. I have some experience assisting surgeons, observing, assisting patients and stocking supplies. What I do know is I want out of the med spa. It would probably be smart, due to my experience to stay in plastics, dermatology or oral surgery. I worked for an oral surgeon and enjoyed learning from him and observing some of his cases. However, I am deeply fearful I will end up back in the med spa and all of my nursing will be in vain. Also, I am planning to move to another state, once I have my RN. I don't want to start over as an aesthetician, because it takes years to build a clientele.

Should I cut way back on my esthetician work and apply for a tech job at the local hospital OR? Just to get the experience. I'm OK to make the financial sacrifice. I'm not too good to work as a tech. I feel like that may be my only hope to break away from the med spa. I have seen some sterile instrument processing tech positions. Would that be a good experience for the OR? Also, are there ever any LPN positions in the OR? I've heard it's easier to get into the OR as a nurse, if they know you from being a tech. Thank you so much.
