HI I am getting ready to start an ADN LPN-RN bridge program and would love to become a NICU nurse when I am finished. I recently applied as a NICU Tech for a local children's hospital with a level III NICU. I had worked there prior to becoming an LPN and have tech experience in their PICU and CVICU units but not NICU. After LPN school I left to take a position as an LPN in an Oncology Clinic since the children's hospital doesn't hire LPN's.
I have since left that LPN position to be a SAHM with my baby girl for the last 2 years and am now ready to go back and finish my degree. I figured that the NICU tech position would give me some extra money to pay for daycare while I am in school and will hopefully give me an advantage at landing an RN NICU position and hopefully a spot in their RN residency program.
I loved working for this hospital in the past and they have an awesome training program for new RN's. Do you think this is a good idea or are the recruiters going to think it's odd that I am willing to take a pay cut for the experience of working in the NICU and opportunity to get my foot in the door and learn what I can about NICU nursing and how the unit runs while in school?
Also the hours are only one 8 hour night shift a week and leave me plenty of time to study and spend time with my little one, I am hoping it is 3-11 and not 11-7 but we'll see. Should I call the nurse manager and let her know I am interested. Last time I worked there it took 3 months to get a call back, hopefully the fact that I am a former employee will push it along.
Thanks
