Low GPA / High GRE: Chances for Combined BS/MS programs?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello... I had a 3.7 GPA in my first year of college and transferred to a top 20 university. But it was all downhill from there and I ended up with a 2.55 GPA from my degree institution in a hard program: Economics. My overall undergrad GPA is something like a 2.8. However, I am a good standardized test taker and expect something around 1450 to 1550 on the GRE. I haven't taken the nursing pre-requisites of Anatomy, Physiology, or Microbiology but so for the sake of argument hopefully I could get A's in those.

My question is this: do I have a chance to get into one of the BS-MS ETP programs, preferably in the New York/New Jersey area? I've been told that someone with low grades in Econ but A's in the pre-med requisites like Organic Chem could possibly get into medical school with a really stellar MCAT. The thing is... I would rather be a nurse practitioner than a doctor. But I don't know if grad nursing programs weigh the GRE as heavily as med schools weigh the MCAT. Also, I don't know if I could stand up for my background as strongly without an interview process.

So what do you think? Should I just concentrate on getting into medical school and going down that much longer road to something I would like slightly less, or could I have a decent chance at getting into an ETP program and becoming a nurse practitioner?

EDIT: I took a break and went back to finish my degree in 2004. All of my grades below B- are from more than 10 years ago. I'm old! Which is one reason I'd prefer not to go the med school route... too long a process for someone who is already older to begin with. I'd like to start working in the field in sooner than 7 years!
