Low GPA from BIO degree.. Wants RN program, possible?

Published

My GPA is low from a couple of deaths in my family and having to cope with that. I have a 2.4 overall GPA Also, my passion wasn't in it for pre-med..but I always wanted to be a nurse but went away from what my parents wanted me to do. (Anyone who is Nigerian knows what is up)..

Should I start from scratch and build up from a LPN..and then go from RN to NP or CRNA?

You are going to have a hard time getting into most ASN or BSN programs with that GPA. Look at local schools in your area and ask to speak with an advisor regarding what you can do to get yourself competitive. You may need to take a few (or a lot) of classes to become competitive.

This is hard to answer since we don't know what your schools look at. Some schools look at "whole picture" (volunteer work, previous GPA, science GPA, paid work experience, interview, essay, TEAS grades etc) whereas others may just look at your overall GPA and Science GPA. Some schools will factor in retakes of failed classes while others will not. We simply do not know.

You will need to do the legwork of finding out what the programs want.

I would worry about your RN before worrying about becoming an NP or CRNA. Many nurses end up enjoying their careers as an RN for varying reasons, so don't get ahead of yourself just yet.

Becoming an LPN first could be a good option given your grades. I would also call around to all the programs in your area if you can and find out about those admissions.

Also, be prepared to possibly have to move. If you truly want to become an RN, you may have to sacrifice where you are currently living. Even those with amazing GPA's have to move due to the extreme competition for RN programs.
