Lottery system in WA?

Published

I currently live in California and am looking at my options as far as nursing programs. I have heard that CA is the only state with a lottery system to get into programs. Does WA have a lottery system as well or just a waitlist? If anyone has any information as to what schools have good programs that would be greatly appreciated as well. I've read into the Unversity of WA School of Nursing so far and havent looked elsewhere yet. Thanks!

Yes, washington does have a lottery...at least at Tacoma Community College. TCC is one of the best schools, other than a University, to get your RN degree in Washington state. All you have to have is a 3.0 or better in your 6 pre-requisite courses (A&P 1, A&P 2, Chem 121, Microbiology, English 101 and Psych 100). Theres also Psych 200 which you have to have completed by the time school starts. They accept around 24 students per quarter. Last quarter they had 93 qualified applicants that participated in the lottery.... The odds seem pretty good. Tacomacc.edu has some more info about the lottery...you just go to the website and go to quick links and select nursing. hope this helps.

Each college and university in Washington has its own system. Some have a lottery for those who meet a basic criteria. Others (like the UW) are competitive applications; they take the ones they like the best. Bellevue College goes with a basic academic preparation and minimum gradepoint, but uses TEAS scores to offer spots to the tops scorers. And most of the programs have their own set of prereqisites. Most of the schools are going away from using wait lists - you have to re-apply each year.
