Los Angeles Valley College fall 2011

Published

I am flipping out! Just got an email from LAVC tonight, asking me to fill a spot for the fall 2011 nursing program!!!! It doesnt feel real yet!!!! I have been applying for one year now, and had received 6 "nos" and was waiting to hear from Valley and COunty! Was sure sure this semester was going to pass me by -again!!!

For those of you who keep applying, dont give up your dream!!!!!!

I have been in LVN school, so i got to let them know i am dropping out!!!!!!!!! ( and saving $20,000) :-)

Hello,

Congratulations! I've been waiting as well and did not know that they send emails out for acceptance. I know that they base their acceptances with a lottery but can you please post your stats. I appreciate it and hopefully I'll be joining you at that school. Have you heard from County yet?

Congratulations Mizz-Belle! See you at orientation. I know the feeling, I have been dancing for the past couple days celebrating.

I just found out yesterday I got accepted too, signed the paper today and got the packet. Now it is a rush to get all the details submitted. (physical, background etc)

I got rejected from LA Harbor but luckily got into LA Valley. *sigh of relief*

I made a mistake of not applying to as many schools as possible. Please don't make my mistake. Apply to as many as possible.

My acceptance letter was in my spam folder (gmail) and normally it doesn't do that. But good thing they called and told me I got picked.

Studying2BNurse, as for your question, I studied hard and put in a lot of time to get all A's in all my classes because I want to become a CRNA (nurse who administers anesthesia). Most LACCD schools once you meet the minimum qualifications it is a lottery, but others have point systems like El Camino, LA County and while Long Beach specifically tells people they select more people from 3.75 GPA pool and some above 3.0GPA and a few at the minimum. So it is very competitive but it also depends on if you will seek higher education as well, because they will look at those grades.

Oh I had a 78% on the TEAS. With a little reading I guess they had an ideal score of 80%. Lucky me :)

Studying2bnurse:

I have been trying to reply to you, but have had problems with the web page submission- so, i shall try again!

My stats

Honors Anatomy B

Physio. A

Micro. A

TEAS 75%. ( not so good :-(. )

Still havent heard from LACOUNTY but thats ok, because i am already locked in to LAVC! Please check your spam folder...

Best of luck

Gto-Mugiwara-

Congrats to you too! I think they said orientation is July 12? I see that the physical has to be done 30 days prior to class date, so i will probably do mine the first week of August.

This still doesnt feel real to me yet: i have tried so hard to get in, i really thought i was only going to be an LVN. I was also having a problem with my pre-reqs- my anatomy was gong to have to be repeated in spring cuz the 5 years would have hit.

See you soon!

Congratulations! I just finished my first semester there and it's a great place. The instructors really want you to do well. As soon as you get your physical, you can choose your clinical site for the first semester, so do that as soon as you can. If you can swing it (the location,) try to get the VA in west LA as it is ALWAYS busy. Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for your post. I have been scared to death about RN school. There are so many posts frrom nursing students who say they were kicked out of the program simply because the instructor didnt like them. Its encouraging to hesr you say that the instructors at LAVC are helpful. So, how was your first semester, and what do you think was your greatest challenge?

I did my physical, but am waiting on labs to come back. Not sure if they will assign me clinical site without it . I do have proof of all my immunizations.

I have a school freind in the program; i think she is in her last semester there. Do you ever see the senior students?

Cheers!

You know, I think it's kind of a cop out to say you get kicked out because an instructor doesn't like you. That being said, my clinical instructor did have an obvious favorite, but I never felt like it hurt anyone else. It was just annoying. The hardest thing really is just that in the first semester you have 5 theory classes and that means kind of a lot if studying. Your fellow students are going to be your biggest cheerleaders. My advice to you is to try to make it to the open lab days at least a few times. That way if you're ever having trouble, the instructor sees that you're making an effort to improve and that helps a lot. We never see other semester students except at open lab and another advantage to going there is meeting them and gettIng tips and encouragement. I hope to see you there!

Thanks for your advice! I agree withh you about people using getting kicked out as a cop out- probably those stdedtns arent applying themselves as they should. Nonetheless, as a new student, not kmowing what to expect, its scarey to read all the horror stories written by nursing students!

Congrats for those of you that got in! I just started compiling my prereqs and have a long way to go yet. Most nervous how I am going to prepare for the TEAS when the time comes since they say that there is NO prep book out there that covers the material appropriately. *sigh*
