Hi-
I've done a bit of reading and this is what I have so far, along with some questions. Correct me where I am wrong.
To come to AUS from US to work (psych RN with BSN and 8 yrs experience) I would
#1 Figure out which state I want to work and apply to that nursing registration board. Takes 6 ish weeks to obtain registration.
#2 With above registration can apply directly for job at hospital.
#3 Once job offer is obtained apply for work visa.
Is this right? Not planning to move for at least 18 mos - tops, 2 years. How long before I plan to leave should I start the process?
In looking at the individual state boards, I read something about sponorship... what is this and is it advised?
Can you recommend some reputable psych hospitals?
Lastly, my plan was to stay and work in Aus for a year and then return to the states and obtain my masters degree (probably psych CSN but maybe psych NP). Then, I started wondering about getting this degree in AUS. Does anyone know how comparable the education would be and would I be able to translate a psych CSN (if it is even called that) in Australia to the US equivalent when I return? Recommend a school?
Thanks in advance!
Christine

Looks OK, Check out the Nursing Councils for the state you want to go to they are all on the net. I will look them up when I'm next on (tomorrow).
For Queensland there is a good psych hospital Wolston Park now known as "The Park" I will try to get the web addresses for you. OK
Mister Chris
Hello, Got the information that you may find helpful as promised:
To get registered you will need to contact each nursing council.
Queensland office is at: http://www.qnc.qld.gov.au but you can email direct for info on [email protected] or even phone
+61 7 3223 5111
To get full info on all Australia try the best site:
http://www.healthstaffrecruitment.com.au
Search through the site for your options you could try:
http://www.healthstaffrecruitment.com.au/jobs_mel.htm or
http://www.healthstaffrecruitment.com.au/jobs_syd.htm
I hope that this is of some help. If you come to Queensland the best place for Psychiatry is "The Park".

Good Luck.

Hi-In looking at the individual state boards, I read something about sponorship... what is this and is it advised?
From what I understand after working with some O/S nurses, you need to be sponsored by your hospital in order to get a working visa. They basically guarantee that you will be working while you are here.
I've heard it can be a bit of a circular process - can't get a job without a visa, can't get a visa without sponsorship (ie a job!).
But I'm not an immigration expert, and this was a couple of years ago.
There's a serious shortage here same as everywhere, so maybe things have slackened off recently.

Well I'm still researching this. I do know some nurses who managed to secure jobs before they even got here and in consequence got a visa on a temp basis - some how. I will let you all know on this thread as soon as I can find out.
I got here from UK on the basis of a job already secured before I left. I did this over the phone from UK. Once I had the job offer and acceptance in writing I got a visa straight away from Australia House in London.
Will get back as soon as I can.
