Locum Tenens questions

I am considering a transition to locum tenens practice in 9 to 12 months. I'm concerned about how long the state licensing process will take through an agency and the availability of jobs. Should I go ahead and get licensed in the states I want to work in, on my own, before contacting a locum agency? I know the locum agencies will pay for this licensure, but I don't want there to be a delay. Is it possible to even get a state license without having a job in the state yet?

Also will the staffing agency pay for the DEA license, as I do not have a DEA license yet?

Any advice regarding locum tenens will be much appreciated.

I work in Family Practice, but have also done (non-ER) urgent care.

I have been doing locum tenens with Staff Care for three years. I have 5 licenses-3 I got on my own and 2 they facilitated. They can move things along quickly- One time they flew me in to a state to get fingerprinted. And sometimes you have to help move things along. Of my 5 licenses, I have only used 3. You have to get a RN and APRN license. I am keeping up all 5 for now. You don't need to have a job to get a license- at least I don't think so but it might vary by state. The time to get a license can range from a few days to a few months. Look over the applications of the states you are interested in and you can always call or email the BON

Re: the DEA-- Staff Care paid two years ago for my first assignment with them . I asked them about paying again next year and they are looking into it. I think it is reasonable to ask and I think they should pay since they make money for placing you. ( they might require a time commitment for paying )

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm currently reviewing all the licensing requirements for the states I'm interested in. Sounds like I'm on the right track. I'm glad to hear that you like Staffcare, as that is the company I am most interested in.
