I've noticed a lot of posts about the media's negative portrayal of nurses (especially ER) as stupid handmaidens. Also, how often do you see a "nurse expert" on TV when there's big health news such as West Nile Virus and the Anthrax outbreaks?! I believe it is our responsibility to show what we know.
There's an excellent book called From Silence to Voice by Bernice Buresh and Suzanne Gordon (both journalists) that offers nurses insight on how to use the media to provide the public with our knowledge. I suggest that every nurse who has ever felt frustrated because your knowledge is underestimated (umm...I think that's all of us!) read this book!
