Last Semester Decision- fear has me frozen!

Nurses Career Support

Published

I am in my last semester of the RN program. I love caring for people and have enjoyed the nursing program but I have this fear of being responsible for the life of someone else. I thought this fear would go away as I progressed through the program. Unfortunately, I feel like the fear is worse than ever. I almost think I would do better in medical social services. I have put so much time and money into this program to drop out now or change my mind now seems unthinkable. I thought about speaking with a student advisor and getting some input. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I would look into nursing positions at ambulatory clinics, primary care offices, public health, etc. Lower acuity patients = less chance of 'killing someone' = generally less daily stress and fear for you!

If you like peds, see if there are Early Intervention Programs in your area. In addition to nursing care, in EI you'll do a lot of social work, physical therapy, speech therapy, etc with children and families who have disabilities, chronic health problems and/or are impoverished, homeless, undereducated. Its a great start if you do want to go back to school to for Social Services.

Hope that helps a little!
