okay...so we used to use paper for all our specimens and the options were frozen or not. Now with our new computer system we have to pick from
1. fresh
2. gross
3. permanent
4. frozen
obviously I get frozen sections, but what is the difference between fresh, permanent and gross.

this is my understanding,
1. fresh-sent without formalin, is "fresh" out of body and needs processed. we send straight down to lab tell them anything inparticular that the MD wants.
2. gross- this is when the MD send it down, but they are just going to look at it and say "yep thats a tooth"
3. permanent- we send our permanents down after they're put in formalin. nothing special with them.
hope this helps. i'll be checking back to see what others say though :)
