LA Nursing Pgms suggestion.

U.S.A. Louisiana

Published

Hello everyone:wink2:

I am new to this site and have recently decided to get a associate nursing degree. I am an international student from Japan and currently a 3rd year student in LA college, i finished most of the pre-req's but the A&P1 and Micro (3.0 GPA)-I am planning to take it in the summer(too bad my current school doesnt offer:scrying:).

Since there is so many people applying the program now,it is unsure to get in right away.SO My question is---

Is there any adverse factor for internationals apply nursing Pgm? look away when we apply?

Which college in LA has a ASN program and has bigger chance to get in now?(private fine) I know OLOL is a private college how is that ASN program hard to get in?any other suggestion on this is much appreciated!

All of this is obviously just my opinion since I too am a student facing the same problems as everyone else but I don't think being a foreign national would have an adverse effect since nursing programs seem to stress the need for diversity (UNLESS you would have some complication with licensing). However, if you are planning on leaving the country 1/2 way through a program, it might be a different story as all of the programs are looking for people who will succeed. Any program you are looking to get into will be 'hard', in that it is very competitive to even get a foot into the door. Last year, the average GPA of students accepted into the LSU CARE program was over 3.7! (That was told to me by an administrator I spoke with about the program but that program also bases their acceptance decision on an essay, an interview, and who knows what else - all in order to increase the diversity of the program plus skew acceptance towards people likely to succeed.) Probably the best source of answers for your questions would be the school that you are considering. And it wouldn't hurt to have several top-notch references and recommendations lined up - professional and educational.

Look for a post on Charity's School of Nursing and follow it back to that site to get the pdf file that tells about their particular selection process. There are some sample forms that you can use to score yourself to see if you would be a likely candidate for THAT program. Also, if you search for the La. state board of nursing's website (I used Google), you can find the 2007 summary report on nursing with lots of numbers and information about applications, enrollments, rejections, ethnicity, etc. that you can use to help you decide where to apply. More specific questions about specific schools might get you more help than my rambling.

Again, all of this is just my opinion based on the things I learned over the past year. Good luck.

Also, the summary reports lists all nursing programs in the state, in case you need suggestions on where to apply.
