LA LPNS and what they can and can't do.

U.S.A. Louisiana

So, I'm going to be attending a PN program at Louisiana Technical College either in August or January. I know, from lurking around here, that in some states LPNs can do alot and that in others LPNs may as well just be CNAs or Aides. What exactly are the laws about what LPNs can and cannot do in Louisiana. For instance can they start IVs, do they give injections, etc? What can I expect to be doing on the job other than cleaning and passing out meds?

When I was an LPN in LA. I could do almost anything except hang blood and TPN, give I.V. push meds, and sign admission assessments. I could start my own I.V's, chart, give meds and do treatments, do the assessments (but I would have to get a RN to sign them.) I think it really depends on what hospital you are at too. I know in different states it is different too.

I can tell you, I am now a RN, and the only thing really different is my paycheck! I have always thought it was crazy, how so many people think LPN's are just glorified nurses aides. An LPN is basically a nurse that just doesn't take all the college credits that RN's have to. LPN's are very un-appreciated by a lot of people, and that is sad! I had a very good clinical as an LPN, and I feel like I was very well trained as a nurse. I only went back to school, because I was tired of doing the same work as the RN's and getting paid a whole lot less!

Good Luck! If you have any more questions feel free to write me back!:nurse:
