Kent state university pre-nursing advice

Published

Hello,

I am a freshman at Kent State's main campus. I am currently retaking structure and function because I got a C the first semester and I am struggling with the course again and think I will end up with a C. Did anyone who attended Kent State know of anyone who got in with a C in structure? I know it is super competitive and am afraid of not getting in.

Specializes in ICU.

I have never heard of anatomy and physiology called structure and function. I guess you learn something new every day. Is this I or II? You need a fundamental understanding of A&P to do nursing school. Have you asked for tutoring? I would also see how many times you can retake a class. You only get 2 chances at any class in my school.

Hello--hoping you had success with structure and function this time. I'm a senior at Kent State main and will be graduating spring 2015. Structure and function is a VERY important class; unfortunately, some students are lucky and get the better teacher while others do not. I'm not sure who you had but I'd like to offer some techniques to hopefully help you succeed. You MUST go to every single class and pay attention (obvious right--many students fail to do this). Review your notes, at least sections of them, every day. Waiting until the night before is bad news for any class, especially structure. Make sure to quiz yourself; reading the notes is good for reviewing at first but will not help you succeed. Quizzing yourself makes you realize what you really know and don't know. Make charts--honestly one of the best study tools I used because organization helps me learn; just reading words on slides sometimes does nothing for me. Overall, the most important thing to do is to find a study technique that works for you; you will use this technique all through nursing school. --To answer your question about the C in structure; I have never heard of a first time applicant getting accepted with any C's; however, I know a handful of people who got in the program in the spring and had maybe one C. It is never the same because it depends how many people apply and what the average GPA is. My last piece of advice--focus on the science pre-reqs; there is a separate GPA for the four science courses (structure, micro, chem, and ochem). Don't worry if you get a B in a psych/soc course; get that A in a science course! Even more important than the grade, UNDERSTAND the information; you will use it forever (especially useful in physiology which you will take when accepted) It is very competitive because there are limited seats but don't be scared. Just work hard and you will get accepted!

GOOD LUCK :-)!!

Get a tutor! They are very helpful. Also they teach you how to study
