Went to the MD for my yearly exam. Mentioned that I thought I might have a UTi she did a UA and found glucose..........sent me for FBS (130)......had me do a repeat and a HA1C (135 and 8.2) When she called me with the results she said "I will leave a prescription at the desk for you for Metformin 500 mg PO BID and come back in 3 months for a repeat HA1CC and FBS." WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO TEACHING???????? I am an RN, 49 years old I know the basics and still I feel a need for some time to have my questions answered!!!!!! SHAME ON HER!!!!!!

Paige,

My father found out he was diabetic the night before he had Quad Bypass surgery!!

He had been NPO since midnight and had had cardiac cath that morning. His FBS was 400!!! [at 7:00PM]. The doc had him on insulin shots and later a pill. Absolutely NO education. He went home and started searching online for info. He found and is still using Dr. Bernstein's diet. It is NOT ADA, but his BS stays in the normal range. He doesn't take insulin or the insulin pill anymore. He dr. said, "whatever you are doing, keep it up!!"

Here is the link to his site:

He has been a Type one diabeteic for 55yrs!!

I hope this helps you. Did you have any symptoms? Dad didn't have ANY of the "normal' symptoms.

From Dr. Bernstein, Dad learned that if you don't have hair on your body, then you probably have diabetes. Dad hasn't had leg or chest hair for at least 25 yrs!! He didn't have excess thrist, or wounds that didn't heal. NOTHING!! He did have a rash on his hands that he went to the dematologist for, but they never did a simple blood test. If they had, they would have caught the diabetes about 10 yrs before his surgery.

I am facinated with diabetes. I applied for a scholarship that asked, if there was one disease you could cure, what would it be? I put diabetes.

Keep us informed of how you are doing!

Take care and God Bless!

How are you feeling now?

My mum was diagnosed with DM Type 11 3 months ago and the hospital did very little teaching with her...I had to tell her stuff. 3 months on she has lost 30lb and hasnt felt better and now realises she has felt "ill" for a couple of years now. She is doing really well with it:)
