Johns Hopkins MSN (Entry into Nursing) WAMC?

Hello,

I am a former US medical student (MD) who is interested in possibly changing tracks and going into a career in nursing. I withdrew from the med school in good academic standing after experiencing problems with my health. I am still eligible to return to my medical program (readmission), but I have been looking at other healthcare professions due to the extreme costs involved in returning to an MD program and paying for another round of tuition with GradPLUS loans.

I was doing some research on nursing programs and found that Johns Hopkins University has a direct-entry/accelerated MSN program. This caught my eye because I am a non-trad and was wondering how I would finance a BSN degree due to the fact that I no longer have access to federal undergraduate loans.

Does anyone have any idea how competitive this program is? I haven't been able to find any information on average matriculant GPAs, GRE scores, admission rate, etc. All I know is that I have the pre-reqs completed already and that there are multiple admissions cycles per year.

My undergraduate GPA was 3.9 (cumulative and science/math GPA are similar, nothing below a B). My grades from med school are graded P/F, and I did fine. I have research experience, paid NASA internship job, and a publication. I also have volunteering experience. Basically the standard med school applicant stuff. The only thing that I can think of that I may be missing would be experience from working in a hospital, but I see nothing about # of direct-patient hours as a requirement, so I assume I could do this while preparing my application (if I apply, it will be sometime next year).

What kind of chances do I have when applying to this program? I know JHU is prestigious and boasts the #1 nursing program in the country. Thank you.

Is there anyone that has any experience with JHU Nursing in general and could give me any insight, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

Hi.

I'm a current student in the Hopkins accelerated MSN program. With your background, I'm very confident you'll be accepted. I'd urge you to approach Hopkins early about Scholarships: there is a lot of it to go around (e.g., full- and half-tuition) and it would be a shame to miss out.

If you don't get a Scholarship, I'd reconsider the accelerated BSN programs. Some programs in roughly the same geographic area as Hopkins (e.g., GW, George Mason) offer accelerated BSN programs that are must faster and cheaper than Hopkins' MSN program.
