Job prospects - Cincinnati, OH area

Published

Hi all,

I am beginning the College of Mount St. Joseph's program in May 2012 which issues you a generic MSN upon completion (I will not be an advanced-practicing nurse; they issue the Masters of Science because the classes are of a higher-level than a traditional BSN program but I will still need to go back and get my certification to become an NP). I was wondering if anyone had any exposure to the job market for these types of graduates? I know it is competitive because of the abundance of nursing schools around here, but I also know that hospitals are really trying to require the BSN over the ADN / RN certification (I spoke to several nursing recruiters on this when making my decision between Christ College of Nursing or a second-degree).

Anyway, any insight at all would be great. I plan on at least volunteering in a hospital or ideally working as an aide, but the program that I am in is VERY accelerated so my work-time will be limited unfortuantely. I do have previous professional work experience however in a completely unrelated field.

I would so appreciate any tips / suggestions / experiences you can provide. Thank you in advance

Hello!!!! I just had my interview for them yesterday! Im hoping to get accepeted to the program as well. They are looking to accept more people for may 2012 but if not i will be attending fall 2012. Are you from that area?

That's great! Good luck! And yes, I am from the Cincinnati area. Are you?

Specializes in Pediatric Hem/Onc.

I would suggest getting your foot in the door of any hospital you're interested in. Take a PRN position somewhere. Your MSN is great, but it doesn't negate the fact that you'll still be a new grad with no nursing experience. Hope this helps!

Well, I can tell you that I have a MSN and 12 years experience and can't even get an interview at any of the local hospitals here in Cincy...... I'm not sure what the trick is to getting a call from HR, but obviously, I don't know it:)

Hey so I work at UC Health and have co workers that graduated from the MSN program from MSJ. I would suggest trying to be a part time PCA at one of the local hospitals to get your foot in the door.

As for BSN/RN (I have my BSN) it only really matters if you want to apply to work at Christ Hospital. They're Magnet and want BSNs. From what I hear, Children's wants BSNs as well.

I went to school out of state (I'm originally from Cincinnati) and had no connections/networking connections whatsoever when I moved back home. But I did have work experience as a PCA and an externship before I graduated.

Good luck!!
