Job Competiton: Credentials for RPN

World Canada

Published

Hi I am a newly RPN. I am an IEN and was assessed by the CNO as qualified to take the CPRNE. I have no experience (recent grad from the Phils) and definitely a new immigrant in this country. Passing the CPRNE was a just the start coz finding a job will be the most difficut phase of all especially for a baby like me. No experience and an IEN.

I researched and found out that almost all institutions requires a lot of credentials, of course almost all of them requires a 2-3years of experience, but scratch that. This will be all about gaining a lot of credentials that will rise us up above all the competitors for the job.

For the mean time, here are the necessary certificates one must take (I must take!)

a.) BCLS certification

b.) IVT certificaton

c.) specialization certificate

d.) Volunteer (I think this is a good asset and will try doing this)

Question:

a.) What other courses/certificates should I add in the list to get a higher probability of being hired?

b.) What other options should I take to be able to be absorbed in a hospital facility? (like volunteering)

c.) Can you advice me of institutions that provides this courses with a cheaper fee? And that you have attended too?

Of the education on your list, BCLS for HCP (health care provider) is the only certificate that employers require.

Do not take an IV therapy course as employers will provide education if required.

Consider taking a Health Assessment for RPNs course at a public college such as; Centennial, George Brown, Humber, Seneca, if you take on-campus course you can practice doing the assessments with classmates.

It is best take additional training from public community colleges or universities, as they are registered with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and are held accountable to provincial law. Also, if you take the course through a public school, you may be eligible for a grant to help pay for the costs of the course after you have completed it, for more information about the grant, see the nursing education inititive application through RPNAO.

Be aware of courses from private colleges, as the courses may not meet provincial standards or have qualified instructors.

Wow thank you so much! You really are a big help!
