I am a pre-nursing student planning on attending JHU Open House on Oct. 6, 2007. I have never attended an open house before and I'm concerned with what type of attire would be appropriate. Also, is their anything I should bring with me? Any advice would be appreciated.

CurlySue,
I won't be able to attend the Open House on campus, but I am flying up on Wednesday to attend the Fall Reception here on the west coast (in Berkeley). I'm estimating the best attire would be business casual or just a tad dressier, I'm going for trousers, dress boots and a nice sweater (basically what I wear to work at a financial institution.) A suit would probably be a bit too much, you don't have to interview yet!
I'm assuming the reception vibe will pretty much be the same as the open house, in an abbreviated timeframe and obviously sans campus tour. I'm just planning on bringing my small notebook for any miscellaneous notes or to remember significant names/peers etc. I'm sure all they are looking for is your attention and personality, remember they use these open house opportunities to sell the program to you and answer all of your questions! Take advantage of the opportunity and get all of the inside information.
Have a great time!

I was told that the open house was pretty informal. The Admissions office even encouraged me to bring my young children....they don't know my young children :) Having said that, it is all relative. If you are used to slumping around campus in cut off sweats and tight layed t shirts- I would suggest something a little more formal. Maybe something you would wear to a family gathering. I do not think that you need to wear a dress/skirt, unless it is what you are comfortable in. If I go, I will likely go for something comfortable, washable, but not jeans. My generation always wears black...we feel we can't fail in black.
Most importantly, come prepared to socialize, ask questions, do your research on the school and their programs that are of interest to you so that you can ask good questions and present your best, most confident self. That isn't some fake representation, just be true. I think they are so used to seeing what people think they want, that when someone shows up being genuine- they remember them!
Good luck! Enjoy!
Thanks guys for the advice. I am planning on bringing my dh. I have two little girls ages 2 and 7 but I do not plan on bringing them. My 2 year old can be a handful. I guess I can rethink wearing my suit but I usually dress up even for the most informal events. It'll be nice just to get to wear a sweater. I live in South Texas and we are still in tank tops LOL. Thanks again!!!
P.S. Can anyone recommend a good hotel??
