hello everyone
Need some help desperately. can anyone help me regarding iv bolus injections. i am looking for a video that shows you how to dissolve a drug in water draw it up and administer it via cannula.
I wanted to know. Say you have 250mgs fluclox and you administer 5 mls water to the drug. what do you next do. i thought shake drug then prepare another syringe (what size needle do you use, green?). Use that syringe to draw up drug and administer via cannula (after flushing both ports with sodium chloride
How many syringes would you need in total. i guess one syringe to administer water to drug,
One syringe withdraw the drug solution
One syringe to use for flush
Please help thanks amer

I'm wondering if I am misunderstanding your question - are you asking how to dissolve a "pill" med and then administer it IV? I can't honestly think of a drug where you do that.
Some medications, like floxacillin comes in a powder that you administer usually 10 mls of sterile water into, then swirl around the bottle until the powder is completely dissolved, then draw up and administer into the IV line. If the patient is HL, then you need to (depending on your facilities policy) flush first (5 mls or so either peripheral or central), adminster med, then flush either with 5 mls for peripheral or 20 for central (possibly followed up with 3-5 mls heparin).
So, if you have a peripheral IV SL you will need:
1 10 ml syringe sterile water (you will inject into med then draw up in same syringe)
1 10 ml syringe NS (flush 5mls before and after)
If you have a central line you will need:
3 10 ml syringes NS (1 before and 2 after)
1 3-5 ml syringe Heparin
Of course your facility might differ, and if you have an IV running (that is compatible) you will only need the 10 ml syringe of sterile water.
Hope this helps
