IV Access Company Viability

Published

I have been approached by some RN and NP friends about starting an IV access company. I am trying to ascertain the demand for this service and want to figure out who the customers for this service would be in the different healthcare settings. Thoughts?

ERZ,

Are you looking at educating nurses on IV placement/certification, or are you looking to place PICC's and midlines in patients?

There is always a need to educate nurses, especially if the state in which they practice in requires Continuing Education hours with each recert of their license.

Placing PICC's and Midlines (these days) really requires that an organization/company use microintroducers and Ultrasound technology.

Thanks for your query. The business I am researching involves placing PICC's and PIV's. As you suggested, we would use microcatheters and ultrasound. Have you heard of any company's that only provide IV access? If so, are you familiar with the type of customer base they serve? I have come to learn that the skilled nursing facilities in my area outsource IV access, so there is one sort of customer. I am trying to figure out the other potential clients.

ERZ,

LTC facilities definetly could use your support, however I'd call several of them in my vacinity (and speak to the administrator) to ascertain:

1. What percentage of their clients receive infusion therapy, and does the pharmacy that provides there pharmaceuticals also provide infusion nurses when staff can't access, or place a line that that patient needs.

2. Or, do they contract out for that service, and are they willing to try you as a competitor.

Home health companies also may use your services, as well as small rural hospitals.

I work for the largest pharmaceutical providers to LTC in the nation and we place PICC's and midlines in all of the aforementioned areas.

Usually, companies want to see that you &/or your infusion nurses have your CRNI as this denotes your expertise in infusion nursing.

Hope this helps :)

B,

Thank you for this information. So far I understand that IV access is provided in the following ways: IV teams in large acute care centers, pharmacies that service home care and skilled nursing facility clients. Can you think of others to add to this list? Do you know of other outpatient settings like doctor's offices where there is a need?

Eve,

At times Vascular Surgical Physicians, do utilize the services of PICC trained RN's especially when there "cup overfloweth". Previously, I worked at a hospital where one of these Surgeons used his nurse to place all the PICC"s and he just accessed the deep veins when the peripheral access failed for one reason or the other. :balloons:

Does your company provide service in Michigan? If not, do you know of any such service?? We are also researching to perhaps start a service in Michigan to aid nursing homes, infusion companies etc.. We want to incorporate full service (insertion, mobile x-ray, radiologist involvement)
