Is in anyone in a nursing program that does not require chemistry as a pre-req

I am just finishing up my last semester of chemistry. For our BSN program we need Gneral, Organic and Biochem. I and II.

I grumbled the entire time about what a waste of time it was, then, suddenly, I noticed that my understanding of chemistry was making a lot of my other science classes easier! Go figure! So now I feel a little better about it. Of course, that's easy to say now that I only have one day left!!!

The ONLY thing that got me through this class with a good grade was the fact that whenever I did not understand the instructor's mumbo-jumbo, I would go home and look up the topic on the internet. I would find high school chemistry sites that explained things in plain English! I would recommend that tactic to anyone who is having trouble.

In my cc they require a chemistry class to be taken before A & P I, however, most of the 4-year programs require inorganic and organic chemistry. To be on the safe side I am planning to take both chem's because I want to get rid of it.

CHEM is pretty cool if you pay attention and try to work out the mathematical problems. There are many sites on the internet that can help you pre-clinical students.

As far as I know, none of the ADN programs at community colleges here require a Chem course. I only had to have one semester of Chem w/lab for the BSN program I'm in.

I have been dodging chemistry for ten years and now that Im in and almost done it's really not all that bad. It is something you must stay on top off. There is alot of math and formulas but it's really not bad. I thought micro would be easy but let me tell you It's the killer....:)

So, let me get this straight. You're going to drive and/or move hours away or, even, to another state just to avoid chemistry? :chuckle

BTW, chemistry helps with other courses required for nursing, which is why a lot of schools require it.

Some of the ADN programs here in Ga use to require Chem as a pre req but sometime last year it was no longer a requirement. Georgia Perimeter College and Gordon College don't require Chem as a pre req..but if you want to get your BSN then you'll have to take 2 semesters of Chemistry.

I haven't read the previous responses yet, but with my program, the Chemistry prereq is waived if you have already taken Microbiology before you start the nursing core courses. The Micro class at that college requires chemistry as a prereq, but at another school, it does not. So I took the Microbiology course at the other school. and transferred the credit to the school where I'm getting my nursing degree.

I'm attending PBCC in Florida. A survey course in chem is a required part of the curriculum. In order to have it transferrable to the upper division, it must be taken with the lab component. I didn't take the lab, so I guess I'll be revisiting chem at some future date.

I found knowledge of chem very helpful in A&P. In nursing school, I haven't yet really found an application. It did teach me how to use dimensional analysis which I use for med calculations and conversion problems.

My school, SUNY Canton, requires either high school or college chem as a pre-req for its ADN program, however, there is no cut-off regarding how recent the course needs to be. I took high school chem 20 years ago and that was accepted. The director of my program explained that it is not absolute that the chem be recent since they incorporate all the necessary chem education needed for nurses throughout the nursing courses.

Plus, not all RN-BSN completion programs require chemistry.

The only pre-reqs my school currently requires is A&P I and Dosage Calculations, of course you also have to take extra courses if you don't test into college level english and math, etc. Chemistry is not part of our curriculum for ADN.

As least around where I am, ADN programs do not explicitly require chem. It is "built-in" as another post mentioned. BSN do require 2 years of chem, the good news is that you don't have to take the really hard version chem.

In general, I think you need to know like high-school chem.
