interventions for NIV

Published

HI, wondering if anyone could give me a hand, ive been sitting here for hrs trying to work it out.

question is.. identify what would be the 5 core nursing interventions required whilst the patient is receiving non invasive ventilation (NIV)

interventions i have thought of so far, and im not sure if they are correct, or if they are the most important 5

- perform mouth care

-position semi fowlers

-monitor cough and secretions frequently

-assess resp rate, sats, level of consciousness, mask, skin integrity

-maintain o2 therapy as ordered

maybe monitor NPPV complications

thanks in advance for any input

Wow... this question looks familiar. I have thus far come up with the same answers Donna.

NIC lists 38 possible interventions for Mechanical Ventilation Management: Noninvasive [3302]. Too many for me to type, but here are a few.

  • Monitor patient’s progress on current ventilator settings and make appropriate changes as ordered.
  • Promote routine assessments for weaning criteria (e.g., resolution of condition prompting ventilation, ability to maintain adequate respiratory effort)
  • Perform chest physiotherapy, as appropriate
  • Promote adequate fluid and nutritional intake
  • Ensure that ventilator alarms are on
  • Check all ventilator connections regularly
  • Monitor for decrease in exhaled volume and increase in inspiratory pressure
  • Provide patient with a means for communication (e.g., paper and pencil, alphabet board)
  • Place patient in semi-Fowler position
