guys,

i've been a nurse for 3 years and a midwife for half a decade, but until now i can't practice my profession in a real life setting, and making a loving out of it.i am really sorry if i have to vent this out, i just can't take it anymore. i feel like a bombshell really to explode anytime now. i have been an instructor before, but because of too much politics inside the institution, i was fired, dammit i was fired. it was the lowest moment of my life. until now when i see the facebook account of my ex colleagues, it just makes me so small to a point that i shed into tears asking myself why i was fired. i took some jobs after that incident but it still wont fill the void space i have in my heart. you see, teaching is my passion. while i was teaching i took an MAN degree at a nearby school but was forced to dropout since i can't finance my schooling anymore. so,i haven't earned even a single unit out of my enrollment. i really really feel disappointed at myself, maybe it's partially because of the health care system as well. it would have been much easier to become a staff nurse or a midwife, it would have been...but no hospital will hire me since all of them are into "forced volunteerism" for only GOD knows as to how long they would want you to volunteer. you get no allowance, you do all the work, and you have to finance all of your expenses. I AM an UNEMPLOYED RM, RN. im sure at this moment a lot of mid and bsn students would kill to have these letters suffixed at their name. they don't know hell yet, not until they graduated and passed the boards. i feel pathetic, i am not that bad of a student when i was still studying, actually i was a part of the honor roll. another thing is that i can't continue teaching, since i lack the MAN degree and hospital experience that the schools are asking for. why are nurses exploited and underemployed in the Philippines?why are we forced to pay for our clinical experiences?why can't these hospitals just hire us? BECAUSE WE ARE FOR SURE, ******* ELIGIBLE! WE ARE CAPABLE. why are they asking for too many documents? for fees? why do we need to have backers or clout in order to have a nurse staff position in government hospitals?why can't it all just be fair?why can't the government wake up and see the hemorrhage of nurses in the country and do something about it?

i don't want to find work in a call center anymore. i want to work as a nurse, as a midwife and utilized what i've learned in college.i know some of you feels the way i do. because i am a nurse, i am supposed to save lives, but i want to be compensated for it. it should not be done for free, i should not volunteer, i should not pay for my service, the hospitals should pay me for my talent, for my ability to analyze clinical critical situation and act upon them logically. i should be treated with respect, i am a nurse, i am a human being. i need to live.

Same here..kinda hopeless..with the "backer" system nowadays it is very frustrating to be called as an "unemployed RN" professional but doing volunteer work..underemployed..in short..ABUSED! I think we are to blame about what is going on. We are the ones who are begging to work as a volunteer. If I also own a hospital I would rather have volunteer nurses and training programs with pay rather than hiring. It is an income anyway..Did you get what I am trying to say? I know we are hungry for hospital experience. I am really not in favor of volunteer work! we should be compensated. We paid high tuition fees and now payment again??!! we should PROTEST! We are professionals! We don't deserve this kind of treatment.

With regards to "whom you Know" policy..It is very unfair! I know a lot of newly hired nurses whose competency is very questionable. How come some hospitals allow this kind of hiring process. We know for a fact that nurses perform a wide range of clinical and non-clinical functions necessary to the delivery of health care so a single mistake is a big no-no.

Hello there, you're not ALONE. we have the same problem. and i believe there's a lot of us who has the same problem too. I think my mind well explode if I' am going to think deeply my current situation. I hope our new government would address our nursing employment. why do we need to work without being paid? and after that, there's still no assurance that we can be hired? nurses are not robot, we eat, we have basic needs also, we cannot fly, we pay for our transportation, we also have our family that needs support from us and etc., how can we sustain to work or serve others? if we cannot afford our own basic needs? food, clothing, transportation. What's wrong? is it because where to crowded? if that will be the reason why do they still allowed those student to pursue there nursing dreams if in the end we all end up like this, even doing volunteer job is so hard to get a slot,you have to wait for a few months.. why not give us a chance to work? or give us an opportunity to practice our profession and have a stable life. is it the end of nursing dreams for those nurses who can't afford volunteers or trainings.??

If someone out there that could help our problem, please give us a chance..

You all are correct! I'm also a Registered Nurse way back 2007,I'm working in a call center. I don't want to leave my current job. So, while waiting for the hospital to call me for deployment I rather have my NCLEX review first, just to compensate my time.

And also, I do have an upcoming trainings and seminars just to add up my knowledge and skills.

wow, i feel your sentiments. although i've been a registered nurse for a year now, i haven't been able to practice yet. i took on a callcenter job for 7months, and boy, was the pay very rewarding. (lol) i had to let go of it because i felt that i should start with my RN life now. but where to go? most of the newly grads today are volunteers. i would gladly go that way, if only i didn't need the compensation. i kind of regret letting go of my callcenter job, because i no longer have a source of income. i would gladly go back to it, but then, how about my nursing life? i've thought of doing a volunteer job before, while i was still working. but, boy, it was hard to find time for it since it takes two hours travel time to get to my workplace. i ended up not doing anything for my life as a nurse, except for red cross training. (my BLS card is about to expire, with me not even benefiting from it).

so, is that the way for us now? choose between compensation and experience? why can't we have both? (oh sure you can, if you know someone from the inside:rolleyes:)

@fayeryynurse; I rather suggest, since you already gave up your call center job, you better find a hospital job and try to submit all your requirements to all hospitals here in NCR. And one thing, if you have money or enough budget try to have your NCLEX review and examination as well. There are seminars that are available for us nurses.

I'm currently working in a call center right now while waiting for the hospital to call me for an entry level position.

no wonder the NLE passing arte is alays below 50. the competency of Filipino nurses. study hard. gosh. even a 75 % passing rate is not enough. then the are the ones getting hired coz of backers

It looks like there's a lot of people in your shoes. What you need to do is form a national organization for nurses with the help of an attorney. You need to stop this whole exploitation process that goes on in your country. Do you all know that in order to work abroad you need paid work experience? The volunteer programs are useless abroad. Studying for the NCLEX should be minor as there are many unemployed RNs in the US who are struggling just like you. Absolutely no nurse in the US can work for free, it's against the law. So what you need to do is form the organization to protect your rights. Instead of paying fees to these hospitals to use you as free labor, you should use your money and put into starting this organization to protect you and other nurses. The more nurses you get to pay into this the more likely you will be able to stop the free labor that goes on in the Philippines. If all the new grads rebel and DON'T do the volunteer programs then the hospitals will be forced to hire you nurses. With this organization you can fight for ratios in the hospitals. There are too many patients and not enough nurses on the floors. The only way to fight back is to rebel against these sick people who exploit nurses. Good Luck to you all!

try applying to Australia. if you have the competency, money, IELTS 7 and up in all 4 bands, and at least 3months exp (i think volunteer will do)...

if you can't volunteer....

i can't continue with my 10th month of volunteer work...
