Interamerican Metro Vs. Kaplan

Published

Hello!!! I have been reading threads on allnurses for months and finally decided to join and get some advice. I already have a BSN and have been researching accelerated nursing programs. I don't already have my science pre reqs so I am looking for program that includes the (I don't want to waste a whole years taking 3 science classes before I start nursing school. I've narrowed it down to Kaplan in San Diego or InterAmericana Metro in Puerto Rico. I love SD, but the school is 50,000 +living expenses. That's only for an ADN so I would also have to spend another 10,000 or so getting a BSN. I will not have a 40 hour week job with 10 days paid vaca for the fest of my life, that monthly student loan petrifies me. I have been living and volunteering in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia for eight years, so I want to become a nurse to work in refugee camps, disaster relief etc. My point is, if I want to take 9 months and go do nursing volunteer work I don't want to not go because I owe 75,000 thousand in loans and can't quit my job. My mom went to Kaplan in SD and loved it, I went to college in SD, I feel like I would enjoy it but the damn loan!!! So I found Interamericana Metro, it almost seemed to good to be true! It's cheap, you get a BSN, I would not have to worry about working so I could use that extra time to become fluent in Spanish and maybe do some volunteer work. Puerto Rico is right up my alley, I'm a dive instructor, surfer and I've lived in islands in the Carribean and Central America for years. BUT I have been reading threads and some people love the school and some hate it. So I am really reluctant. I am going to check out PR for a week or so next month to get a feel. I am good at school, I study, I'm sure I'll do fine. But I want to feel like when I graduate I'm somewhat confident. I've read posts where people say that they hardly ever had clinicals, and there barely even was class. If it's a lot of studying and self teaching that's fine. But if I'm going to not be going to clinicals and actually learning that's not going to work. If you went to Inter do you regret it?? Soooo sorry for my super long rant, but any more specific infor on people who have graduated from Inter or are currently in school. Thanks so much for your time Lacy

I may be late. I went to Inter. Received my Bsn. Clinicals were weekly. But its a fast learning pace. Lots of quick learning and youtube. This program is defintaley fast and alot of self teaching involved. PR is its own world and everything and i mean EVERYTHING island time. You will meet great people but patience is def needed for this program and living in pr in general. If you can learn basic spanish you will be fine. Study smart and hard, ask questions, respect your professors and youll do fine. This is pr. Keep expectations low. But at the same time- do your best and go above and beyond for yourself.

Thanks for your response! Sorry I'm responding so late. Did you feel any effects of the financial crisis? (Closing hospitals so less clinicals, or anything?) also did you take out student loans? Was it easy? I filled out my FAFSA and know what I qualify for, but I'm going to need to take out a bit more. When I was at the school I could not get a straight answer about taking out a bigger loan. Thanks so much for your response!

Hi! Jamielynn874_, BSN

Where did you go after receiving your BSN at Inter? I currently live in NY and plan on going to the school, but moving back after graduation. Was it difficult to sit for the NCLEX and get a job?
