Insurance question - Former NP with inactive license, working as an RN.

Published

Hello all,

After 5 years working as an NP, I happily left the field and have started working as a public health RN. I purchased an occurrence NP policy from NSO last year at great expense to cover my NP license while I decided if I was going to continue working as an NP in the future as my license was still in effect. Now, my license is inactive, and I'd like to drop my NP coverage if possible.

I know that generally insurance companies want RN's with NP licenses to buy a policy at the highest level of licensure. As I am effectively 'retired' from NP work, but continue to work as an RN, is it necessary to continue to buy NP level insurance given my level of education? Essentially, is it possible for me to be accused of using my NP education in malpractice, and if so, would an RN level policy cover me? I am currently covered as an RN under the government risk pool, but I like the idea of having personal coverage for good Samaritan situations, and also to sleep at night! I live in the state of Washington.

Any advice, especially from RN/JD or risk managers would be appreciated. I recognize that these questions are likely dependent on my current government policy and whatever personal insurance I purchase, but a general answer would be appreciated.
